Goose - King of The Brig

The beauty of Football is: There’s always another day and it usually comes around pretty quickly. Having been down in the dumps on Saturday with defeat at the hands of Trafford, just three days later we are ready to go again and an evening trip into Deepest Derbyshire and the beautiful Spa Town of Buxton beckons.

While the coach travellers on arrival make for the Kings Head in the Town Centre for some light refreshment Those of us that went by car enjoyed the plush surroundings of the refurbished Buxton clubhouse, and very smart it is too. Pie, Peas and Gravy seem to be the order of the day to get the ball rolling.

Thanks to Rob Melling for the photo

The talk in the car on the journey had been about the prospects for the evenings match…Actually it was as much about what beer they’d have in the Clubhouse !! Well on arrival we find they have Staroprammen on Draft. Get In !! Czech Lager at it’s absolute finest, That’ll do for Me and Nick, While Mark and Ruth opt for a Bowland Brewery offering of Hen Harrier, nice choice.

In the Kings Head… Another one from Rob Melling

So, on to the football and the reason we are here. Buxton have a 4g Plastic pitch, a wise acquisition bearing in mind that The Silverlands is the highest football ground in England and they often had game after game postponed in the winter months due to the Peak District climate, before the all weather surface went down. Football on artificial surfaces is not everyone’s cup of tea but it gets used 7 days a week and brings in much needed income for the club.

Silverlands, home of Buxton FC

Anyway, Brig did what Brig always do, they look the better team, then concede the first goal. On this occasion however, heads didn’t drop, spirits remained high and the commitment was there for all to see. It looked like it might all be in vein until in the last minute “The King of Brig”, AKA “Goose”, rose like a Salmon on a trampoline to head home the deserved equaliser. Cue Wild celebration from the hardy band of Briggers behind the goal. That’s why we love football, moments like that create memories.

Buxton’s very nice Clubhouse

Back in the car and it’s a very pleasant journey back Lancashire. It’s a late night but those last minute goals make it al worthwhile and make us eager for more….. Bamber Bridge FC…What a Football Club !!! Where to next ?
