Northern Premier League

  Warrington Rylands  - 1     Bamber Bridge -  2

Bamber Bridge made it three wins on the bounce with a fine 2-1 Victory at The Hive Arena, home of Warrington Rylands on Saturday afternoon. Two first half goals from Lewis Hey and Jack Baxter, making his 50th Bamber Bridge appearance, were enough to take the points despite a strong second half showing from the home side. And for once, a rare away game this season that didn't involve a three hour coach journey.

An even opening spell saw both sides looking to get forward at every opportunity. But it was The Lancashire side who were creating the better chances. A ball down the right side of the Rylands penalty area found Lucas Wevaer who held off a challenge to get in shot from a tight angle that hit the side netting. Fin Wallbank then had a shot comfortably saved by the home keeper before James Pradic on loan from North End for his thrird spell at Brig made two excellent reaction saves to keep the score level.

"The Brig Ultras"  What a Motley Crew!

Lucas Weaver had a chipped effort clear the bar and Danny Edwards saw his shot blocked after a fine run into the box, before Brig deservedly took the lead on 28 minutes.  Olly Molloy played the ball in to Lucas Weaver who rolled it superbly into the path of Lewis Hey on the right of the area. Lewis took one touch before firing the ball across the keeper and into the far corner of the net.

Just two minutes later and The Brig lead was doubled. A free kick played into the box was partially cleared and then  played into the feet of Jack Baxter on the edge of the area, Jack took a step to his right before striking a daisy cutter of a shot low into the keepers left hand corner, the home keeper getting a touch on the ball as he dived left but not enough to keep it out.

The Hive Arena

The Cheshire side were stunned into action and in the 40th minute James Pradic was once again on his toes to make another superb save from the Rylands centre forward who had been sent clear into the box. The ball was swiftly played upfield and Lucas Weaver was again unlucky as he won the race with the defender to get to the ball before striking a low shot passed the keeper but agonisingly also just past the far post.  The referee signalled 3 added minutes and Fin Wallbank was shown a yellow card for what the official saw as time wasting from a throw in.

The second half, much like the second half at Borough Park Workington last Tuesday night, was  a  very tense affair with the home side dominating possesion and putting Brig under immense pressure. Brig had made two changes at the break with Danny Edwards and Jeff Adubofour making way for  Jarma Mohammed and Chris Churchman. The pressure was building and from a left sided corner on the hour, Rylands pulled one back. A towering header  flew like a bullet into the roof of the net. As on Tuesday, Brig were being made to defend, and defend they did.

Two more changes came in the 70th minute With Olly Molloy and Lewis Hey being replaced by Billy Hasler-Cregg and Alex Kenyon, As Brig continually repelled the threat of Rylands. In truth, for all their possesion The home side were unable to muster any real opportunities and the Brig defence protected James Pradic superbly. The Brig keeper was also commanding his area and when called upon  late in the second half he rose superbly to take an inswinging cross into his grasp and keep hold.

With the game moving into added time It was Brig who were now enjoying a good spell of possesion and frustrating their hosts before the referee blew the whistle for full time. A first ever win for Brig at Warrington Rylands and indeed the first ever goals scored by Brig at this ground. Although in fairness this was only the third time we'd played here.

With this three game winning run Bamber Bridge have moved swiftly up the League table and now occupy a place in the top ten, and with a home game to come against Mickleover Sports at Irongate next weekend the season is now coming together nicely.

Northern Premier League

  Workington Reds  -  1    Bamber Bridge -  2

Bamber Bridge returned from The Non League Theatre of Dreams, that is Borough Park, Workington, on Tuesday evening. A fine 2-1 victory giving The Briggers all three points. A superb attacking first half followed by a dogged, "dig your heals in" second half, saw Brig emerge with a well deserved victory.

Borough Park, Workington on a floodlit, warm Autumn evening. What a ground. Many would say a dilapidated old relic of a stadium. To me, it has more character than any other ground in the League. Wonderful venue for a football match.

Brig started, as is customary this season, on the front foot and right from kick off they were the side looking the most likely to open the scoring. An early through ball found Olly Molloy racing towards goal, but the Lino’s flag put a stop to that move. But 11 minutes in, after some great probing moves down both the left and right flanks, Brig took the lead. Olly Molloy received possesion on the left side of the penalty area, turned and threaded a superb diagonal ball to Lucas Weaver running in from the right, one touch and Lucas swept the ball passed the advancing keeper into the far corner of the net.

Olly and Lucas already look to be forming a great understanding between them and minutes later a similar move found Weaver again, this time is cross come shot drifted over the bar. But on 20 minutes The Lancashire side doubled their advantage. A terrific ball down the right channel from Pottsy found Lucas Weaver who cut inside before delivering a low cross that was cleverly glanced home by Jeff Adubofour off his midriff as he ran towards the near post.

Workington were pretty much playing on the break with Brig dominating possession and looking dangerous with every attack. Olly Molloy came close to adding a third for Brig with a flicked header following another Lucas Weaver cross from the right, the ball flashing across the face of goal and just wide. With the half coming to a close Big Jeff almost grabbed his second as he met another right wing cross at the far post, his towering header crashing back off the post. Danny Edwards followed up but good defensive block cleared the danger for The Reds.

The second half began with Workington clearly having been on the end of a half time roasting as the came flying out of the traps and looked a different side altogether. Brig were now the team playing on the break and Olly Molloy saw a low shot, after a great first touch, saved by the home keeper. Jeff Adubofour looked to have picked up a knock early in the half and was replaced by Billy Hasler-Cregg. Lewis Hay was then replaced by Churchy.

The pressure from "Wukkie" was building, as they launched the kitchen sink at Brig, forcing corner after corner. But The Brig back line was holding firm. A breakaway from the visitors led to a free kick on the right of the area, The ball foud it's to the back post were Simon Grand met it with a controlled side foot volley, The ball flashing a foot or so wide of the post.

The Workington pressure paid dividends on 75 minutes when they pulled on back. Brig lost possesion on the right, leading to a clear run at goal from The Reds striker who calmly slotted the ball home to half the score and bring the home support into the match, who were now roaring on their side.

Alex Kenyon came on to replace Lucas Weaver as Brig looked to hold on to their lead. The remaining fifteen minutes or so, saw wave after wave of Workington attacks with a multitude of corners, but Brig were defending magnificently, and in truth, for all their possesion they were not actually troubling Nico in the Bamber Bridge nets. Several shots cleared the bar and Brig were quick in to the tackle blocking everything that the Cumbrians threw at them. Four minutes of added time came and went before the referee brought the game to a close with The Briggers claiming all three points.

The small but vocal band of Brig fans behind the goal roared their approval as the team and staff came over to take the applause. Two wins on the bounce now and Brig have moved up nicely into mid Table. Another away trip on Saturday now awaits at Warrington Rylands. Not a happy hunting ground for Bamber Bridge on our two previous visits. But things are coming together nicely now and I fancy Brig to make it a hat-trick of victories on the spin.

Northern Premier League

  Hebburn Town  - 5     Bamber Bridge - 1

Positives first, Hebburn Town FC, on our first ever visit, has jumped immediately in to the top 3 best grounds myself and fellow travelling Briggers have ever visited. A terrific venue, The Clubhouse and facilities are second to none and the stadium itself is fabulous. The welcome we received was nothing less than we would expect from The North East of England. First Class, friendly, and grateful that we had made the long three hour journey to get to The Hebburn Sports ground.

Superb Clubhouse and Beer Garden at The Hebburn Sports Ground

The match itself, was pretty much over before the half hour mark. Brig once again punished for every individual mistake while at the other end the ball just not sitting kindly and chances, although to be honest there were very few, were not taken. The Hornets are clearly a side brimming with confidence after their superb start to the campaign. However it was Brig who once again started brightly as they looked to zip the ball around with pace.

The home side soon got the measure of their Lancashire visitors and an early cross led to a downward header that was comfortably picked up by Nico in the Brig goal. A sign of things to come? It certainly was. On 10 minutes The Tynesider’s took the lead and never looked back. A free kick into the box , The Brig keeper came to punch clear but got his timing wrong leaving the Hebburn No.10 to head in to an empty net.

The Usual Suspects !!!

Before Brig gave themselves any chance to recover they conceded a second just two minutes later and with it, a mountain to climb. A long throw into the box, again not dealt with by the Brig defence, was flicked on and slotted home. Two very avoidable goals and the game was effectively over as a contest at this stage. The hosts were now all over The Briggers who were struggling to keep possesion with a series of long balls that were comfortably mopped up by the Hornets defence.

A chance for Bamber Bridge arrived on 25 minutes as the home keeper was adjudged to have handled the ball outside his area on his left hand side. The Brig free kick in a promising position struck the first defender and the chance was gone. Brig were trying hard, but nothing was coming off and passes going astray. It was almost three for Hebburn Town on the half hour as a shot from close range was deflected over the bar for a corner.

What a great Clubhouse

If the outcome of the match wasn’t already decided, it certainly became so in the 43rd minute. A long ball, again the undoing of the Brig defence sent Hebburn clear, the ball squared across the box to be stroked home and give the Hornets an unassailable three goal lead at the break.

Three down going into the second half, Bamber Bridge deserve at least some credit for a spirited response, which was considerably better in terms of attacking intent, pace and purpose than the opening 45 minutes.. An early opportunity fell to Olly Molloy on the left of the penalty area, his good first touch set up a shooting chance but it was drilled wide of the post.. But when your lucks out, it’s out. And from the keepers goal-kick, Hebburn made it 4-0. A slip from a Brig defender allowed the home forward to take possesion, side step Nico in goal and roll the ball home.

Brig then created another shooting opportunity as Olly squared to Billy Bould who’s shot from 15 yards was gathered by the keeper, possibly the first attempt on target from Brig. Pottsy then saw a curling effort from the left side of the area sail just wide of the far post. Brig were at least now creating chances and showing some character. Millie made a series of substitutions on 70 minutes with Jeff Adubofour, Jarma Mohammed, Max Cane and Danny Edwards, on for Olly Molloy, Lewis Hey, Michael Potts and Lucas Weaver.

On 75 minutes Brig managed a consolation that their second half efforts had merited. A fine surging run from Jarma Mohammed, as he beat the left back and raced along the byline before pulling the ball back to Billy Bould who was tripped as he attempted to shoot. Jack Baxter made no mistake from the spot.

Any forlorn hopes of a comeback lasted all of 60 seconds as The Hornets kicked off, raced forward and were themselves awarded a penalty for a trip. That was duly planted into the back of the net to make the scoreline 5-1

With the game comfortably won, the home side eased off and Brig had several late chances to narrow the scoreline. A good Danny Edwards run ended with a low drive that was inches wide and then Churchy tried a chipped effort that floated just over the angle of post and bar. A corner from the right was met with a header from Jeff Adubofour but it was well over the bar. In the last minute great work from Adam Dodd on the left as he skipped passed a defender and whipped over a cross, Danny Edwards was a hairs breadth away from making contact as the ball rolled out to safety.

So Full time and Brig had taken a bit of a thumping. The game was in truth over at the break but the team did show some spirit and character in the second half and that was appreciated by the small group of travelling Briggers.

Dwn, but not out. Briggers enjojing the Clubhouse. Thanks to Heather Paynter for this selfie.

So, it’s on to Tuesday and a home game against Prescot Cables. It’s way too early to be talking about “must win” games but with eight games without a victory and Brig sat in the bottom four of the table, Tuesday would be a great night to get back on the road to recovery.

Last word and Thanks to Hebburn Town FC, back in the clubhouse, their supporters were gracious and humble. A wonderful place to visit and despite the result on the day, The Brig fans certainly enjoyed their short stay on Tyneside.

Northern Premier League

  Newton Aycliffe - 1     Bamber Bridge - 1
Newton win 5-3 on Pens after Extra time

Bamber Bridge suffered penalty shoot out heartache at The Moore Lane Park Stadium on Tuesday evening. Losing 5-3 on spot kicks following the 1-1 draw against Newton Aycliffe FC in the First Qualifying Round of this season’s Emirates FA Cup.

Pre Match Drinks

Following the 1-1 at Irongate last weekend, Brig travelled in good spirits confident of progression in a competition that the Lancashire side have suffered somewhat of a fractured relationship with, in recent seasons. The match started with Brig looking much the better side and certainly in the opening 20 minutes it was Bamber Bridge controlling the pace and dominating possession.  A Michael Potts dipping volley from the edge of the box had the keeper beaten but flashed just wide of the post. Another sweeping move down the left led to corner, that was then headed just wide of the far post.

Jarma Mohamed was next to try his luck, a low drive from the left side of the area but the keeper made a comfortable save. Danny Edwards tried a similar effort from the right side of the area but again it was straight at the keeper.

Seth is Up for The Cup !!

The home side had started to gain confidence and from 20 minutes on, the game became much more of an even contest. As the half wore on, it was the Newtonians who were now getting on top. A swift move down the left sent a through ball through the middle which was finished with aplomb, but fortunately for Brig the Linesman flagged for offside. Undeterred the hosts pushed forward and with the half coming to a close they struck the post with a shot from close range.

The second half saw an immediate change for Brig with Mark Cullen replacing Jarma Mohammed, but it was the home side who started as they had ended the first half. Brig responded and the game became something of a scrappy affair with neither side creating anything of note in the next 20 minutes or so. But the Moore Lane Park outfit were starting to win the 50/50 balls and looked just a tad sharper as the half wore on.

On the hour Millie opted for a further change at the sharp end of the Brig attack and brought on Olly Molloy for Billy Bould. The move paid almost immediate dividends with Brig taking the lead soon after. But not before Newton Aycliffe missed what looked like an open goal, the ball scooped over the bar from close range following a cross from the right.

But on 65 minutes The best move of the match led to Brig taking the lead. A fine ball down the right channel sent Olly Molloy racing in to the box, he squared the ball with a terrific low cross in to the path of the advancing Lorenz Malarkey Mathews who rifled the ball into the roof of the net from around the penalty spot area. Brig buoyed by the goal went on the offensive and for a 10 minute spell looked like adding to the scoreline. What looked a clear foul in the penalty area on Malarkey Mathews as he was unceremoniously upended, was waved away by the referee much to the disgust of the player himself and the small band of Briggers behind the goal.

Brig sensed their chance and a further change came as Danny Edwards left the field to be replaced by Max Cane, but slowly the home side were picking themselves up and looking to get back into the game, a back post header cleared the bar before on 76 minutes the leveller arrived. A corner from the left seemed to lead to a bit of a scramble, the ball eventually finding it’s way into the back of the net. Both sides were now looking for the winner but the game drifted to 90 minutes with no further opportunities at either end.

Into extra time and almost immediately Brig could have gone ahead, Olly Molloy was thwarted by the home keeper with a superb save from a powerful drive. That was as close as either side were to come in the first period of extra time as both teams cancelled each other out. A final Brig change saw Fin Wallbank on for Malarkey Mathews. And it was Brig who created the better opportunities in the last 15 minutes of the tie. Max Cane came close when his shot was again well saved by the keeper, pushing the ball out for a corner, which found Mark Cullen, but he was unable to wrap his foot around the ball and it sailed away high and wide.

Jack Baxter then dragged a shot from the left just wide of the post before the home keeper once again came to the rescue for the hosts. A long throw from the right was flicked on by Simon Grand and looked to be heading over the keeper and into the net, but the home stopper reacted superbly to arch back and get a finger tip to the ball and push it over the bar. And with that save we came to the lottery of the Penalty shoot out.

Newton Aycliffe took the first spot kick, and scored, the next four kicks also finding the net before Brigs 6th was tipped on to the post by the home keeper giving the hosts a 3-2 advantage. They made it 4-2, Brig scored next, but the home side made it 5 out of 5 to win the tie with their final penalty.

Come and have a look at what you could have won !!

So once again, Brig exit The FA Cup at the first attempt. A very disappointing result, especially in light of the fact that tonight, and indeed over the two games the Newton Aycliffe keeper was probably the man of the match. Brig certainly created the chances to win the tie. But it’s over for another year and back to the League action at the weekend with another visit to the North East with a very tough looking fixture at Hebburn Town
